The string is made from ethically farmed wool and the common The string used for AIO Emotion Kit is made from a blend of ethically sourced English wool and the common stinging nettle. But do not worry, the nettle has been treated so it is lovely and soft, and will not sting anyone. Stinging nettles produces some of the world’s longest fibres and is very sustainable as it needs no fertiliser and does not rob the soil, from its nutrients. It is also one of the most carbon-neutral fibres available out there. We use a yarn, where the nettle fibre has been mixed with ethically sourced wool, to ensure its durability. Great for the environment and will last you a very long time, ensuring a durable and sustainable alternative to synthetic fibres. Free of toxins and safer for a child to play with.
To ensure the least amount of waste, we have opted for potent colours, which require the least amount of chemical intervention. Our captivating reds are made out of beetroots, rescued from food waste. They were either too ugly, misshaped or bruised, making them unattractive to the supermarkets and customers. But we ensure our red colours are just as vibrant, no matter how ugly, misshapen or bruised they are. To us, there is still plenty of life in them.
Our bright yellow comes from a household stable, which you have most likely used in a curry in the past. Amazing turmeric gives a bold and bright yellow colour and requires no heat intervention to activate. Nor any chemical binders. The wood beautifully soaks up all the colour.
Our lucky green was created from our already existing indigo dye and turmeric dye. It took time and experimenting to get the perfect mixture of green, but we have managed to limit the number of extra ingredients for our dye and used up all remaining pre-existing dyes for our lucky green. Ensuring zero waste.
Our beautiful blue takes a bit more work, but only for us, not the environment. Our blue is created from our very own homegrown indigo plants. When they have matured to their full extent, we dry them and turn them into powder, which can be used all year round. We do not use strong chemical binders to activate the pigment in the plant, but use a natural fermentation process, involving yeast and sugar and a few days of patiently waiting. So it needs a little bit more care. The same way your sourdough does.
Please be aware that all our dyes are specially created by hand and may vary in shade. We are not robots, but we think it makes them a lot more beautiful and special. Pictures are therefore only a guide.
With wood waste being one of the biggest fillers in landfills, besides textiles, we have to combat wood waste only used recycled softwood for AIO Emotion Kit. We recycle wood from a London based studio, who otherwise would be unable to use the remains and our wood has not been coated and is free of toxins. Giving it the highest wood waste grade A. Safe for children to play with and less impactful on the environment.
